A new permanent, low-cost, low-power SO2 camera for continuous measurement of volcanic emissions

Since its introduction to volcanology in the mid-2000 s, SO 2 camera has become an important instrument for acquisition of accurate and high time-resolution emission rates, aiding hazard assessment volcanological research. However, with exception a few locations (Stromboli, Etna, Kīlauea), hitherto majority measurements have been made on discrete field campaigns, which provide only brief snapshots into volcano’s activity. Here, we present development new, low-cost, low-power permanent deployment volcanoes, facilitating long-term, quasi-continuous (daylight hours only) measurements. We then discuss preliminary datasets from Lascar Kīlauea where instruments are now continuous operation. Further proliferation such instrumentation potential greatly improve our understanding transient nature volcanic activity, as well volcano monitoring/eruption forecasting.
